Planning Student Activities

By the time you complete the lesson sequences on the fundamental concepts and processes of archaeology, you ought to select a suitable group of archaeological activities for your students. These probably ought to include 1) the very structured experience of a dig in Shiner's Trench at the Archaeological Education Center, Fort Frederica National Monument, 2) a more free-form experience like having the students bring artifacts or pictures of artifacts from home to school for class study, and 3) a tour/tours of local archaeological resources.

The left frame lists some possible activities. Just click on any link to examine an activity. We include details on learning goals, materials and tools needed for each activity. In the case of tours, we also include a rough estimate of the time each tour will take. Obviously, the time needed is a major variable and some tours to important sites (St. Augustine, Fort Mose) are not included here because of their distance from Glynn County schools. You can learn about these sites from the National Park Service's Castillo de San Marcos site and the Fort Mose Historical Society website.

We have not included a tour map because each school will have a different starting point and because most teachers know the area well enough to plan the route. If you need a map you can purchase one inexpensively from the Brunswick/ Glynn County Chamber of Commerce. ÿ
