Brunswick Cemeteries

Cemeteries also vary according to ethnic groups.

Greenwood is Brunswick's largest African American cemetery.It contrasts with Palmetto, the city's turn of the century "White" cemetery.
One interesting feature in Greenwood is the Memorial to Negro Pioneers.

Also compare these stone markers with the wooden markers often used in the past. Shapes and designs found on Cumberland Island closely resemble shapes and designs in the Caribbean.

It may not be feasible to visit any small family or church cemeteries, but there are a number of them in the area.

One interesting example is the Grove Cemetery on St. Simons Island where slaves are reputedly buried.Another is the cemetery of Christ Church at Frederica on St. Simons Island
This interesting child's grave is found in Alabama. It shows the use of African derived burial practices: grave goods, mounded earth, and swept ground. You can see similar traditions, interspersed among more common types, at Behavior Cemetery on Sapelo Island.
