Union Street--the African American segment

As an economic class, African Americans were less prosperous than other Brunswickians and their homes reflect it. They were of simpler design and usually had only one floor. Porches, however, used to be an essential of American home design. Everyone had them for whatever reason--prestige display or additional living space. Notice how intensively these occupants use their porches.
This house began as a two room home. Later a porch as added on perhaps after the "ell" addition to the left. Finally the porch was enclosed with glass and screen.
This simple "railroad car" house is interesting for the use its inhabitants make of their porch.
These two houses were probably built by the same builder, possibly as rental duplexes. The simple porches are used intensively.
This home owner displays the flag and a Christmas wreath. The porch's furnishings suggest that the occupants spend a good deal of their free time on the porch. During the growing season most porches are filled with decorative plants.
